Youth killing: Quit if you are helpless, PDP tells Omar

JAMMU, March 6, 2013

Peoples Democratic Party\'s senior leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig on Wednesday tendered his conditional resignation to Speaker Mubarak Gul while stressing on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah\'s resignation.

\"Chief Minister has himself admitted on the floor of this House yesterday that he is completely helpless in the matter of killings (by armed forces) in Kashmir as long as the security forces enjoy immunity under Armed Forces Special Powers Act. He has no moral authority to remain clung to this chair\", Mr Baig said in Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, asking Mr. Abdullah to listen to his conscience.

Mr. Baig passed his written resignation to the Speaker requesting him to accept it before the Chief Minister\'s if he decided to step down as the head of the Government.

Mr. Baig later clarified to The Hindu that his resignation letter is without date as he did not know when Mr. Abdullah would "listen to his conscience" and step down. He said he wanted to allay the ruling National Conference\'s apprehension that PDP would rush to grab the power if Mr. Abdullah quit the government.

Mr. Baig was speaking on Tuesday\'s killing of a youth in Baramulla allegedly in Army\'s firing on a crowd. Chief Minister was not present during the special discussion ahead of presentation of the State\'s annual budget later on Wednesday.
