Police set to take Bitti to Rajasthan

KANNUR, March 12, 2013

The Kerala police formed a 20-member team to investigate the Bittihotra Mohanty/Raghav Rajan case, even as a team from Rajasthan arrived here on Monday.

The members of the Kerala team have grouped themselves into squads and plan to visit different centres involved in what they believe is a complex web of deceit, impersonation and forgery.

One squad could leave for Rajasthan as early as Tuesday, along with Bitti, to collect details from the Alwar jail from where he was released on parole in 2006 before absconding.

Another will go to the educational institution in Odisha where Bitti had studied. Yet another squad will probe his contacts at Puttaparthi.

Bitti, arrested on March 9, was produced before the Payyannur Judicial First Class Magistrate.

The police were given custody of the suspended probationary officer with the State Bank of Travancore for 10 days.

A four-member team from Rajasthan headed by the Circle Inspector of the Lal Kothi police station in Jaipur, arrived in the evening. They are expected to submit a production warrant at the Payyannur court seeking custody of Bitti.

The police collected from Kannur University and the Chinmaya Mission Institute of Technology the documents produced by Bitti to gain admission to the MBA course in 2009. University officials said the police team retained documents including his application, mark lists, school records and degree certificates.

The police also examined the documents produced by Bitti to seek a passport in his fake name.

Father unruffled

Cuttack Correspondent writes:

Bittihotra's father and former Odisha Director-General of Police B.B. Mohanty has surfaced at his Cuttack home, and was stated to be "unperturbed" and "unruffled."

Unseen for three days and keeping a safe distance from the media, he stayed put in his house throughout Monday after returning from an undisclosed location on Sunday night. A battery of mediapersons was camping outside.

A doctor and family friend who visited the house to treat Mr. Mohanty's ailing mother said: "He doesn't appear worried over all the reports that are appearing in the media relating to his son. He is unperturbed and appears unruffled. He is doing his normal work in a very calm and composed manner," said the doctor, who identified himself as Priya Mohan Mohanty.

Ever since it was reported that his fugitive son was arrested, Mr. Mohanty had switched off his cellphone and had not met anybody. However, a local TV channel reporter on Saturday claimed he spoke to Mr. Mohanty in the early hours of the day. Mr. Mohanty reportedly told the reporter that the TV clips of the youth arrested in Kerala did not appear to be those of his son.
