HIGHLIGHTS OF KISAN MELA TO BE HELD AT PAU ON MARCH 15-16

LUDHIANA, MARCH 14:



The stage is all set at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) for the two-day on-campus Kisan Mela on March 15 and 16 in Ludhiana. Various departments of the PAU will educate the participating farmers and the farm women about new agri-innovative techniques, and latest technological practices through display and field demonstrations.



During the mela, the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics will give field demonstrations on recommended varieties of rabi crops Besides, an exhibition of recommended varieties of Kharif crops will be organized, which will highlight newly released varieties namely "PR 121 and PR 122" of rice, "Punjab Basmati 3 and Pusa Punjab Basmati 1509" of basmati, "LH 2108 and NCS 855 BG II" of American cotton, and "HG 365" of guara. The farmers will also be familiarized with the crop production and protection technologies.



The Departments of Fruit Science and Vegetable Science will educate the farmers about the new varieties of citrus and guava namely "Daisy, W. Murcott and Shweta," and net-house production and mulching technology for tomato and capsicum. In addition, they will display the photographs and fresh samples of fruits and vegetables and will highlight the production technologies for the control of mealy bugs, and citrus mite, psylla, leaf miner and aphids.



The Department of Floriculture and Landscaping will acquaint the farmers with the newly released varieties of gladiolus and pansy, arrangement of pot plants in landscape, and technologies developed for chrysanthemum and gladiolus.



The Departments of Entomology and Plant Pathology will give field demonstrations on integrated pest management in rabi crops, and management of bacterial blight in rice through seed treatment. The departments will also dwell upon the safe use of pesticides, bee-keeping as subsidiary venture, and management of yellow and brown rusts in wheat.



The Departments of Agronomy and Soil Science will focus on resource conservation techniques, chemical control of weeds, direct seeding of rice/basmati rice, judicious use of fertilizers on soil test basis, and integrated use of organic, bio, and chemical fertilizers for higher productivity.



The Departments of Food Science and Technology, and Microbiology will shed light on mushroom cultivation, natural vinegar production from sugarcane and grapes, and processing techniques for the preparation of food products from cereals, fruits and vegetables, dairy and meat.



The Departments of Zoology and Forestry and Natural Resources will provide information about beneficial birds in agriculture, artificial nests to conserve beneficial birds, management practices of poplar-based agro-forestry systems, and control measures for insects-diseases of various agro-forestry trees.



The Departments of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Processing and Food Engineering, and Soil and Water Engineering will impart knowledge about improved grain storage methods, turmeric and honey processing, use of drip and sprinkler irrigation system, cultivation of vegetables in poly/net houses and operation of farm machinery like paddy transplanter, laser land leveler, fodder and vegetable harvester, moong thresher, sugarcane planter, etc.



The College of Home Science will organize exhibitions and demonstrations on dietary management of obesity, utilization of pulses for good health, kitchen gardening tips, food hygiene and sanitation, and drudgery reducing tools for kitchen garden. Competitions in vegetable cutting using chopping board, preparation of nutritious products using pulses and vegetables, drawing and colouring of fruit basket, and in patch-work will also be held during the mela.



The School of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology will highlight agro-climatic characterization studies, climate variability trend analysis of Punjab, and impact of climate change on various crops.



The School of Energy Studies for Agriculture will give information about renewable energy techniques such as biogas generation from paddy straw, solar grain dryers, and solar water and air heaters.



The School of Agricultural Biotechnology will lay thrust on breeding citrus rootstocks for salinity and disease tolerance, developing new lines for direct seeded rice, and application of molecular marker in fruits and vegetables.
