Akhilesh meets slain DSP’s wife, promises CBI probe

LUCKNOW, March 5, 2013

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav met slain Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia-ul-Haque's wife Parveen Azad in his native village of Jafuhar tola in Deoria district on Monday.

He assured her of an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the murder.

The Chief Minister, who was accompanied by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mohammad Azam Khan, handed over two cheques of Rs. 25 lakh each to Mr. Haque's father Shamsul Haque and Ms. Azad.

He also promised two gazetted rank government jobs for the next of kin of the deceased officer and said strict action would be taken against the accused.

Mr. Yadav visited Deora after Ms. Azad staged a dharna and refused to permit the burial of her husband till the accused were arrested. She had demanded that the Chief Minister meet her. Only after that were Mr. Haque's last rites performed.

In her FIR, Ms. Azad accused the former Food and Civil Supplies Minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya of plotting her husband's murder.

Unconfirmed reports from Deoria said the Chief Minister faced stiff opposition from the people of Jafuhar tola village who demanded that the accused be punished.

Earlier, Mr. Yadav, while intervening in the discussion on the Kunda incident in the Assembly, had urged Ms. Azad to end her dharna and bury her husband. He had assured that the guilty would not be spared and indicated that he was prepared to accept the demand for a probe by any agency.

Interestingly, Mr. Raghuraj Singh has also demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident.

Talking to journalists, Raja Bhaiya accused the Bahujan Samaj Party of plotting to frame him in the Kunda incident.

He said his driver Rohit Singh, who had been named as an accused, was with him when he met the Chief Minister in Lucknow on the night of March 2 when the incident occurred in Balipur village.
