“GHAR DI SABZI-DAL UGAO: SIHAT BANAO, PAISE BACHAO” TO BE THE THEME OF PAU KISAN MELAS

LUDHIANA, FEBRUARY 20:



"Ghar di sabzi-dal ugao: sihat banao, paise bachao (Grow vegetables and pulses in your household kitchen garden: Save money and Stay healthy)" will be the theme of the series of seven Kisan Melas, to be organized by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in March 2013 in various parts of the Punjab state.



Divulging programme details, Dr M.S. Gill, Director of Extension Education, said that the first Regional Kisan Mela will be held at Ballowal Saunkhri (District Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar) on March 1, followed by the second and the third melas at Khalsa College, Amritsar; and at Gurdaspur on March 5 and 7, respectively. Informing that the fourth Regional Kisan Mela will be organized at Rauni (Patiala) on March 11, Dr Gill told that the fifth mela will be held at PAU campus on March 15 and 16. The sixth and the seventh Regional Kisan Melas will be organized at Faridkot and Bathinda on March 19 and 21, respectively.



Meanwhile, the first day of the on-campus Kisan Mela i.e. March 15 will witness the "Crop Produce Competition." Giving contours, Dr SPS Brar, Senior Extension Specialist (Field Crops) and Convener of Produce Competition Committee, said that the competition of the recommended and approved varieties of vegetables including potato, carrot, green onion/onion, green garlic, brinjal, radish, turnip, tomato, peas, chappan kaddu, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumber, green chillies, sweet pepper (simla mirch) or any other seasonal vegetable, will be held. Besides, the competition in other crops such as sugarcane (recommended varieties), shakker/gur, gram plants with pods, turmeric, or any other crop will also be organized, he told. The competition of recommended and approved varieties of fruits including ber, guava, lemon, papaya, kinnow, or any other seasonal fruit will also be held. Dr Brar added that among floriculture, samples of marigold, loose rose/cut rose, gladiolus, gerbera, or any other flower will be received for the competition.



Furthermore, Dr Brar informed that the entries for the competition will be entertained up to 11.30 a.m. at the produce competition stall, near PAU Kairon Kisan Ghar. Advising that the samples of the produce may be brought personally by the farmers, he told that no produce samples brought by the District Extension Specialists (DESs)/Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) faculty members will be entertained for this competition. The farmers can seek guidance from the DESs and faculty members of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) for participation in the competition, he suggested.
