SAVE WHEAT CROP FROM MANGANESE DEFICIENCY: PAU EXPERTS

LUDHIANA, JANUARY 24:

The Soil Science Department of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has cautioned the farmers of the Punjab state against the manganese deficiency in the wheat crop. The Head of the Department, Dr U.S. Sadana said that the manganese deficiency has been noticed in the wheat fields of the Punjab where the crop has been sown in sandy soils. He informed that the deficiency appears under intensive cultivation, especially, in rice-wheat rotation. Referring to its symptoms, Dr Sadana told that the middle leaves show interveinal chlorosis with light grayish yellow to pinkish brown coloured spots or streaks. At earing stage, the symptoms become prominent on flag leaf, he added.

Imparting preventive advisory to the farmers, Dr Sadana said that in case manganese deficiency symptoms are observed, give 2-3 sprays of 0.5% manganese sulphate solution (one kg manganese sulphate in 200 litres of water per acre) at weekly intervals to the wheat crop. For better results, spray the crop on sunny days. For further queries, the Head of the Department can be contacted at phone no. 0161-2401960/Ext. 317.
