PAU ANNOUNCES DATES FOR SEVEN KISAN MELAS TO BE HELD IN MARCH 2013

LUDHIANA, JANUARY 31:



The Directorate of Extension Education of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has announced the dates for the series of seven Kisan Melas, slated to be held in March 2013 in different parts of the Punjab state. According to the decision taken during the meeting, held under the chairmanship of PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, the series will begin with Regional Kisan Mela at Ballowal Saunkhri (District Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar) on March 1, followed by the mela at Khalsa College, Amritsar; on March 5 and at Gurdaspur on March 7. The fourth Regional Kisan Mela will be held at Rauni (Patiala) on March 11 whereas the two-day mela at PAU campus will be organized on March 15 and 16. The Regional Kisan Melas at Faridkot and Bathinda will be held on March 19 and 21, respectively.



Divulging contours, Dr M.S. Gill, Director of Extension Education, said that the melas will acquaint and equip the participating farmers and farm women with the farm innovations, technical know-how of scientific farming and need-based agri-technologies for forthcoming Kharif season. Besides, the melas will provide an opportunity to the farmers to visit exhibitions, interact with farm experts, discuss their agrarian problems and seek queries for the same. Dr Gill told that the farmers can also purchase new seeds, planting material, and farm literature, depicting latest agri-technologies during the melas. Apart from spreading awareness about conservation of natural resources, and judicious use of agro-chemicals, the melas will create awakening, amongst the farming community, against the prevailing social evils like drug abuse, female foeticide, dowry system, etc., he added.
