Training programme for agri officers begins at CIPHET

Ludhiana, December 24



An eight-day model training course on post harvest & value addition technologies for production catchment areas was inaugurated at the Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) here today. Around 15 officers of various agricultural departments across country are taking part in the training programme.



Speaking on the occasion, Director Dr U.S Shivhare said that the institute has developed number of technologies in post harvest sector and working extensively in transferring technologies to end users. "We developed technologies which provide low cost solution. While litchi peeler imported from China costs Rs 20 lakh, the similar capacity peeler developed by the institute costs just Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh only. Technologies like mechanical pomegranate extractor developed by the institute with 500 kg per hour capacity and groundnut pod decorticator have become quite popular," he said, adding that their purpose is to help the establishment of small scale industries in food processing sector.



Emphasizing that post harvest sector is key for agricultural growth, Dr Shivhare informed the participants that CIPHET is regularly conducting entrepreneurship developed programs for farmers and entrepreneurs. "These programmes are especially designed to train them in the technologies by providing hands-on-training so that aim of creating self employment could be achieved." He assured all support to participants who have come from across the country to take part in the training programme. Dr Indu Karki, Scientist at Transfer of Technology (ToT) Division, revealed the participants about schedule of training programme including the field visits. Head Transfer of Technology Divison Dr Deepak Raj Rai is the course director of this training.





The programme will include training on processing and value addition technologies for oilseeds, dehydration of food products, cooling systems for crops and animal shelters, food packaging for shelf life extension, practical on food packaging, utilization of waste potato for making cattle feed, soyabean processing and value addition, application of plastics in agriculture, processing and value addition technologies for meat and poultry, marketing of agricultural produce, development of extruded food products, processing and value addition technologies of millets, agro-processing centers for value addition & employment generation, composite flour and value addition and green chilli powder and puree.
