PAU ORGANISES FIELD DAY AT VILLAGE KAUNKE KALAN

LUDHIANA, DECEMBER 26:-----



A field day on "Popularizing Alternate Cropping Systems to Rice –Wheat for Resource Conservation and Enhancing the Economic Returns" was jointly organized by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and Syngenta at village Kaunke Kalan, recently. The programme was a part of joint project of PAU and Syngenta. In spite of dense fog and cold wave, more than 250 growers from nearby villages like Gurusar, Dagian, Kular, Aligarh and Galib participated in the field day.



In his remarks, the Chief Guest, Dr. M.S.Gill, Director of Extension Education, PAU, laid emphasis on cooperative farming and impressed upon the farmers to diversify their cropping systems for more returns and conservation of resources. On this occasion, Dr Gill launched the PAU recommended new wheat weedcide "Axial" (2 litre packing for 5 acre with free nozzle). The farmers associated with GroMore Rice project were honoured by the chief guest for enhancing their farm income by increasing the crop yield. The growers also shared their experience of rice project with focus on yield and quality.



Dr Surjit Singh, Principal Investigator of the project-cum-Senior Extension Specialist, explained about the weed control in wheat and stressed on not using the same group of herbicides year after year. He further emphasized on avoiding to and fro movement of lance during the spray of herbicides.



Mr Malwinder Singh Malhi, Project Manager, Syngenta, presented an overview of the wheat project and gave safety tips (during spray application) to the farmers.



The PAU experts including Dr J.S. Kular , Professor of Entomology (Extension); Dr Chander Mohan, Senior Extension Specialist (Plant Pathology); and Dr Sohan Singh, Agronomist; explained the farmers about insect control on different crops, especially, wheat. They dwelt upon the benefits of different cropping sequences and disease control like yellow rust/powdery mildew control with Tilt. The experts gave live demonstrations on spray application in addition to the demonstration of tractor boom sprayer. The farmers appreciated the initiative of the joint project. S. Jagrup Singh proposed the vote of thanks.
