PAU HOLDS TRAINING COURSE FOR FCI OFFICERS ON SAFE STORAGE OF FOOD GRAINS

LUDHIANA, DECEMBER 11:



A one-week training course on "Safe Storage of Food Grains and Quality Standards" began at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The course involves the participation of the officers of category II and III of Food Corporation of India.



The Director of Extension Education, Dr M.S. Gill informed that the course will impart knowledge to the trainees on grading, classification and quality assurance of cereal and coarse grains; factors affecting quality of food grains; and quality control equipments and procedures. Besides dwelling upon cleaning, grading, drying, aeration and air tight storage, the experts will educate the trainees about the effect of various factors on storage of food grains with focus on importance of moisture and temperature, said he. The experts will also speak on the modern bulk storage and online quality control checks; handling of equipments used in modern grain storage and milling system; rice milling and quality control in modern rice mills; prevention of mycoflora and mycotoxins in food grains; production of bio-ethanol from damaged cereal grains and nutrition upgradation of damaged grains for use as animal feed, added Dr Gill.



Apart from this, identification and management of insect-pests of stored grains; safe use of pesticides in stored grains; problems and management of pesticide residues in stored grains; and procurement policy and marketing practices of food grains will be other highlights of the course, told he. The trainees will also be apprised of rodent pest management at post-harvest stage and bird management in grain storage facilities, added Dr Gill.
