LUDHIANA, DECEMBER 11:
The students of the four constituent colleges of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today gave an oral presentation for "Dr Avtar Singh Atwal Gold Medal -2011-12. Dr Atwal, a well-known scientist, has served in various capacities at PAU and been pioneer in the introduction of Italian honey bee 'Apis Mellifera' in India. The presentations of the students were based on their respective thesis relating to their Master's degree.
Giving evaluation details, Dr Gursharan Singh, Dean, Post Graduate Studies (PGS), PAU, said that the special focus was on ability to deliver, ability of answering and ability to attract the attention of panel members. Besides, the originality of research problem, major breakthrough/achievements, interdisciplinary research, scientific tools used, communication skills, attitude accuracy and publications were the other thrust areas for assessing the students for the award. Dr Singh added that the presentation aims at inspiring the students to conduct research and express their views strongly.
Four students of the PAU namely Abhijit Kar, Anupriya Singh, Pooja and Poonamdeep Kaur gave presentations for the award. Abhijt Kar, student of Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture, dwelt upon "Residues of Chlorantraniliprole on Cabbage and Cauliflower" while Anupriya Singh, student of Department of Food and Nutrition, College of Home Science (COHS), spoke on "Impact of Supplementation of Functional Beverage on the Nutritional Status of Sportswomen." Pooja, student of Department of Microbiology, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (COBS&H), delved upon "Optimization of Fermentation Conditions for Production of Wine from Guava (Psidium guajava L.) whereas Poonamdep Kaur, student of School of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (COAE&T), shed light on "Computer Based Payroll System for E-Governance at PAU, Ludhiana."
Earlier, Dr S.S. Kang, Professor of Plant Pathology, welcomed the dignitaries and the participants. The Deans including Dr PPS Lubana (COAE&T), Dr Neelam Grewal (COHS), Dr R.S. Sidhu (COBS&H), and the nominees of the deans of the colleges and Director of Research evaluated the students.
