The Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is opposed to the Shiv Sena's move to rename Shivaji Park as "Shiv Tirth."
Despite the virtual memorial to Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray at the park yet to be dismantled, Sena corporators have been insistent that it be renamed as 'Shiv Tirth' in honour of their founder's memory, who used to refer to the park by that name during the party's annual rallies.
At an all-party meeting at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday, Sena corporators stuck to this aggressive stance.
MNS corporator and the party's group leader in the BMC Dilip Lande said the Sena should not try to pass the proposal simply because it had the numbers in the civic body. "We will strongly oppose the renaming of the Shivaji Park, he said adding that if Thackeray wanted to rename it, he would have done so when the Sena-BJP alliance was in power in 1995 or when the Sena took control of the BMC in 1997.
