International conference on One Health at GADVASU

School of Public Health and Zoonoses, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana is going to organise an International symposium on the theme "One Health: Way Forward to Challenges in Food Safety and Zoonoses in 21st Century" and National conference of Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists (IAVPHS) on 13-14 December, 2012. According to Dr JPS Gill Organizing Secretary cum Director, School of Public Health and Zoonoses, the One Health concept is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment. While revealing the main objective of conference Dr. VK Taneja, Vice Chancellor, Vet Varsity said that greater progress in prevention and control of infectious diseases requires a more directed effort focusing on the complex interplay between human health, the health of animals, and the environment. There is need to ensure the production of safe and quality food of animal origin in view of the increased risk of the spread of diseases of animal origin to consumers and the globalization of trade of animals and animal products. He said that Biological and chemical hazards pose many challenges that are likely to encounter during the production of foods of animal origin. Thus, health specialists and scientists have to give high priority to develop measures and issue guidelines on the quality and food safety.

Dr Gill also said that this event will impart fruitful results and will provide a platform to scientists from different disciplines with the objective of One Health, food safety and zoonoses, for sharing their research, methodology, inventions, innovations and ideas. Sh G C Pati, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt of India will be the Chief guest of this event. Dr VK Taneja, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU shall preside the conference. Dr.Baljit Singh, Professor and Associate Dean (Reaserch) Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Dr. Volker Gertz, Associate Director (Reaserch), Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization, Dr John Gordon, Associate Dean (Reaserch), College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Dr Alvin Gajadhar, Reaserch scientist cum Head, Canadian Food inspection Agency, Canada are among scientist participating from abroad. In this International symposium and conference, veterinary and human health specialists, veterinary public health specialist, veterinarian, physician, food quality and control specialists, wildlife specialists, and environmental health specialists from PGI Chandigarh, PHFI, WHO, state and central universities, state and central medical colleges, food and milk processors and industrial participants are likely to participate.
