Sri Lanka 107-5 in reply to NZ\'s 412

COLOMBO, November 27, 2012

New Zealand was eyeing a big first innings lead against Sri Lanka after Tim Southee dismissed Angelo Mathews and Tharanga Paranavithana in the morning session on day three of the second test on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka went to lunch at 107—5 in reply to New Zealand's first innings total of 412.

Overnight batsmen Paranavithana and Mathews had seen off the first hour with conditions overcast and ideal for seam bowling, but New Zealand hit back after the drinks break in Southee's successive overs.

First he had Tharanga Paranavithana caught by wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk and then Angelo Mathews was spectacularly caught by Martin Guptill at second slip. Southee had figures of 4—35 at lunch.

New Zealand could have dismissed Tharanga when he was on 32 as Trent Boult found the edge, but captain Ross Taylor at first slip grassed a regulation opportunity.

Just before lunch a close stumping chance of Prasanna Jayawardene was referred to the television umpire, who took a long time before ruling not out.

Middle order batsman Thilan Samaraweera, who had split the webbing between his middle and righter fingers of his right hand came to bat at number six and was yet to open his account, while Prassana Jayawardene was on four when lunch was taken.

Sri Lanka lead the two match series 1-0.
