South Africa all out for 388, trail Australia by 162

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA, November 24, 2012







A wounded Jacques Kallis scored a half-century and led a 93-run rearguard stand with Faf du Plessis to help South Africa avoid the follow-on after a batting collapse on Saturday in the second test against Australia.



Top-ranked South Africa resumed on day three at 217-2 in reply to Australia's first innings of 550 and lost both established batsmen at 233, with offspinner Nathan Lyon removing Jacques Rudolph (29) and Peter Siddle having Graeme Smith (122) caught behind in a period when the tourists lost 5-17.



Kallis (58), who injured his right hamstring bowling on the first morning, batted at No. 9 and stroked 11 boundaries and a six before he was caught behind.



Du Plessis scored 78 from 159 balls and was chasing runs in the last-wicket stand when he miscued to Clarke at short mid-on with the total at 388, giving Ben Hilfenhaus figures of 3-49 in 20 overs.



Lyon (2-91) and Siddle (2-130) shouldered the bulk of the overs and took two wickets apiece, while Clarke claimed the key wicket of Kallis with his part-time left-arm spin and occasional legspinner David Warner picked up Hashim Amla's wicket late on Friday.



Siddle had Smith caught behind and AB de Villiers (1) out lbw both batsmen losing referrals to the TV umpire.



Du Plessis went in after Rudolph drove offspinner Lyon directly to Rob Quiney at short cover and produced a well-composed half century on his test debut.



Siddle had troubled Smith with a bouncer when he was on 118 and then the South African skipper's luck ran out on 122 TV umpire Asad Rauf confirming a feint edge after Smith referred umpire Billy Bowden's original out decision. Smith had an earlier reprieve on 46 when Wade missed a stumping chance and got the benefit of a referral to the TV umpire after being given out caught behind while approaching his 26th test century.



Kallis ducked under a bouncer from Hilfenhaus on the first ball he faced. The 37-year-old allrounder was clearly restricted by the leg injury that kept him off the field for most of Australia's first innings.



Siddle also tested Kallis with a series of short-pitch balls, forcing him to crouch and bend and work the sore muscles on his right leg.



After facing 93 balls, Kallis eventually he tried to sweep against Clarke and the ball clipped his glove as it carried down leg-side to Wade. Bowden said not out, but the Australians referred the decision and TV replays confirmed the dismissal.



Australia had its own injury concerns after young paceman James Pattinson left the field after bowling just one delivery. The Australian team said he went to hospital for scans on his injured left side but results of the tests weren't likely before Sunday.
