PAU GOLDEN JUBILEE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT BEGINS

LUDHIANA, NOVEMBER 2:-



A four-day \"Golden Jubilee Hockey Tournament-2012\", began at Pirthipal Singh Hockey Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University, today. Mr. Ishwar Singh, Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana was the Chief Guest and PAU Vice Chancellor, Dr. Baldev Singh Dhillon presided over the inaugural function.



Speaking on the occasion Mr. Ishwar Singh said that field games play an important role in shaping the personality of a person. He further said that among the field games Hockey is regarded as the supreme game in which India maintained its supremacy for a long time adding that Punjab players have remained backbone of the Indian Hockey team.



PAU Vice Chancellor, Dr. Baldev Singh Dhillon said that University feels proud in having produced four hockey players who led the country in Olympic and World Cup. Games teach us discipline and team work, he said.



Director Students\' Welfare, Dr. D.S. Cheema informed that four universities from Punjab namely Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, Punjab University (PU), Chandigarh, Punjabi University (PbiU) Patiala and Guru Nank Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar are participating in the hockey tournament.



The first day of the tournament two matches played. First match was played between PU, Chandigarh V/s GNDU, Amritsar in which GNDU defeated PU by 4-0 goals. Jaswinder Singh and Hardeep Singh of GNDU scored two goals each. In the other match played between PAU and PbiU, PAU won the match by 6-3 goals. Tarnajeet Singh made hatrik, while Davinder Singh, Jagpal Singh and Varinderpal Singh scored one goal each for PAU. Sukhbir Singh, Sunil Kumar and Gurjinder Singh scored for PbiU.



Tomorrow\'s Fixture:



First Match at 12.30 p.m. Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar V/s Punjabi University, Patiala.



Second Match at 2.30 p.m. Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana V/s Punjab University, Chandigarh.
