Guru Nanak Dev University has won the PAU Golden Jubilee Hockey Championship by defeating Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana by a margin of 3-0. The championship was organized by Directorate Student Welfare, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. In the first half of the match, Jagroop Singh of Guru Nanak Dev University scored the first goal in 34th minute. In the second half Hardeep Singh of the same University scored second goal in the 41st minute, while third goal was scored by Gurjant Singh of GNDU in the 44th minute securing a clean sweep for GNDU team. The match seemed undecided in the first half taking the game to a new level. PAU secured the second position in this Championship.
Director Student Welfare, Dr Devinder Singh Cheema welcomed the chief guest and the participating teams. The winning team was felicitated by Padam Shri Charanjit Singh, former Olympian and Captain of Indian Hockey team. Congratulating the winners, he expressed his pride in being a former student of College of Agriculture, before it was established as a University. He further stated that Punjab Agricultural University has been instrumental in providing, besides him, two national players and Olympian captains to India, namely, Prithipal Singh and Ramandeep Singh. In the end, while blessing the students, he wished that in the coming Olympic Games too, a player of this soil leads the Indian Hockey team. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University honoured S. Charanjit Singh on this occasion. Dr. Rajinder Singh Bawa, Vice Chancellor, Chandigarh University and a former student of PAU was the Guest of Honor for the championship. Former hockey players namely, Colonel Jasjit Singh Randhawa, Ajay Pal Singh Punia, Bhupinder Singh, Sudhir Kumar Malhotra, Arun Kumar, Dr Jasjit Singh Kang, Dr Harpal Singh Bhullar along with contemporary national players were also felicitated. Padam Shri Prithipal Singh, Hockey Olympian and former Director Student Welfare, PAU along with his better half Charanjit Kaur and daughter Jaspreet Kaur were also honoured on this occasion. S. Harjinder Singh Bhullar, retired Assistant Director Sports who has being giving tireless direction and coaching to the hockey players of PAU for 36 years was also felicitated.
Dr Baldev Singh, Vice Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University thanked the four Universities of Punjab for sending their teams to participate in the PAU Golden Jubilee Hockey Championship and stated such participation would envision a new league for Indian sports culture. He mentioned the remarkable sportsmanship showed by participating teams. He expresses great pride in mentioning PAU's role in the development of Indian Hockey. At the same time, he stressed upon a dire need for strong efforts in maintaining this development. In the end he expressed his hope that the present hockey players will walk on the path shown by S. Charanjit Singh and would work hard under the tutelage of Olympian Captain and Deputy Director Sports S. Ramandeep Singh Grewal.
Panjab University, Chandigarh beat Punjabi University, Patiala by 4-1 to attain the third position in the championship.
