PAU GOLDEN JUBILEE YEAR: STAGE SET FOR FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATIONS

LUDHIANA, OCTOBER 15:



To commemorate its Golden Jubilee Year, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is all set to celebrate its Foundation Day on October 17 at Pal Auditorium of the university. The Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, S. Sukhbir Singh Badal will be Chief Guest of the function while Dr Arvind Kumar, Deputy Director General (Education), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will be the Guest of Honour. The Deputy CM will inaugurate "S. Prakash Singh Badal Bhawan," at PAU which has been dedicated to the Punjab farmers. The PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, will deliver the welcome address.



Since its inception in 1962, the PAU has made remarkable progress in agriculture and allied sectors. It has made abundant contribution in feeding the nation and uplifting the farmers economically, by developing/recommending 707 varieties/hybrids of different crops till date. Out of this, 117 varieties have been released at national level. The PAU was adjudged as first "Best Agricultural Institute" by ICAR in 1995 and "Best Farm University" by Mahindra and Mahindra in 2011. In recognition of its vital contributions to the nation, the university was given a special grant of Rs 100 crore by the Central Government to modernize its research and infrastructural facilities.



During the foundation day celebrations, four technical sessions will be held in which renowned agricultural stalwarts, from across the country, will deliver lectures. The eminent speakers including Dr R.B. Singh, President, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), Dr S.L. Mehta, former Vice-Chancellor, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur and former DDG (Edn.), ICAR, Dr C.D. Mayee, former Chairman, Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, and Dr G.S. Kalkat, Chairman, Punjab State Farmers' Commission, and former PAU VC, will shed light on various aspects of agriculture. The farm experts will speak on the topics "My impression about PAU," "Towards an evergreen revolution, "Agricultural education quality holds key to global competitiveness" and "GM technology- challenges and opportunities." The sessions will be chaired by Dr Arvind Kumar, Dr S.K. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKVV), Palampur, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon and Dr K.S. Khokhar, Vice-Chancellor, Chaudhary Charan Singh (CCS) Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. This will be followed by a cultural programme in the evening.
