UK, Russia admit ‘differences’ over Syria

LONDON, August 4, 2012

Britain and Russia on Thursday admitted they had "differences" over Syria but said both wanted an end to the conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who met British Prime Minister David Cameron on the sidelines of the London Olympics, said there were areas where the two countries "see eye-to-eye" and would continue to work together to find "a viable solution".

Mr Cameron, who has previously accused Moscow of blocking United Nations' attempts to put more pressure on Damascus, said: "We both want to see an end to that conflict and a stable Syria. We will continue to discuss with our foreign ministers how we can take this forward."

Mr Putin, who did not attend the opening ceremony of the London Games, was here to watch the judo competition.

Alluding to the fact that he has a black belt in judo, Mr Cameron joked he was glad he was only taking the Russian president to the competition and not competing with him.
