PAU MAKING EFFORTS TO EMPOWER RURAL WOMEN: PAU VC

LUDHIANA, JUNE 15:2012



"Rural women, being an integral part of the agrarian structure, are involved in nearly 80% of the food production initiatives in the developing countries. To empower rural women, the PAU is making all efforts to educate the rural population by imparting them knowledge to fight various social evils like female foeticide, drug abuse, dowry and various aspects of nutrition security, said Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Skill development trainings, being provided by the PAU scientists, has enabled many farm women to establish their own ventures and become successful entrepreneurs, he highlighted.



According to the Census 2011, there is a wide gender disparity in the literacy rate in India where 82.1% of men are literate against 65.5% of women. Situation is no different in Punjab, where 66.5% of rural women are literate against 79.6% of their urban counterparts and 77.9% of rural males. Dr Dhillon underlined the need for concerted approach, aiming at holistic capacity building of women including knowledge and skill generation, decision making and political empowerment, which are essential for bridging the gender gaps that exist in the development process.



The Dean, College of Home Science, Dr Neelam Grewal, said that the field of home science, with its scientific knowledge and social science background, is ideally suited to undertake such endeavours. Informing that the college is offering various degree courses in diverse streams of Home Science, she told that the college runs four graduate programmes which include B.Sc (Hons.) Home Science- 4 year, B.Sc (Hons.) Fashion Designing- 4 year, B.Sc (Hons.) Nutrition and Dietetics – 4 year and B.Sc (Hons.) Home Science-6 year. The qualifying eligibility for the first two is 10+2 with arts, commerce or science streams while for the B.Sc (Hons.) Home Science- 6 year programme, it is matriculation, she said. The candidates having science subjects at 10+2 can apply for BSc (Hons.) Nutrition and Dietetics – 4 year programme, she suggested and informed that the last date for receipt of applications without late fee is June 18 and with late fee is June 25.
