HEREDITARY AND EMOTIONAL FACTORS LEAD TO OBESITY: PAU EXPERTS

LUDHIANA, JUNE 13:

"In the last two decades, there has been dramatic rise in obesity across the globe. It is estimated that nearly 250 million people in low and middle income countries suffer from obesity. The hereditary and emotional factors such as boredom, loneliness, depression or sense of social rejection are responsible for overeating leading to obesity," observed the Food and Nutrition experts of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The rapidly increasing prevalence of obesity indicates that many people are at risk of diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, they said, while underlining the need to create awareness among the population about the risk and causative factors of obesity and its preventive measures.

The expert, Dr Balwinder Sadana, said that obesity occurs when the energy intake is more than its expenditure. The combination of changes in the dietary and activity pattern, especially, an increase in high fat, energy dense diets and sedentary lifestyles are some of the key factors responsible for more energy intake, she added.

Referring to the dietary management, Dr Poonam Bakhetia suggested low calorie diet with restricted carbohydrate and fat, normal protein, vitamins and minerals and high fiber. A gradual weight loss of 2-3 kg/month is desirable, she told, while recommending energy as 20 Kcal/kg ideal body weight for sedentary and 25 Kcal/kg for moderate worker. The protein allowances should be 1g/kg of ideal body weight. Inclusion of fruits and vegetables is vital to fill requirements of fiber, vitamins and minerals, she stressed.

The PAU experts said that aerobic exercise reduces weight by suppressing appetite, thus, decreasing food intake and increasing metabolic activity. Hormones and drug therapy should be used only under the directions of physician, they emphasised.
