SOW ONLY PAU RECOMMENDED PADDY VARIETIES: DR. GILL

LUDHIANA, APRIL 27:-----

The Director of Extension Education of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr. M.S.Gill has suggested the farmers of the state to sow only the PAU recommended paddy varieties in Punjab which include: PR-118, PR-116, PR-114, PR-111, PR-115 and PR-113. Dr. Gill said that the PAU recommended varieties not only give higher yield but can also tolerate most of the pathotypes of diseases. The varieties are released after thorough testing, said Dr. Gill. Elaborating further, he mentioned that the mid duration varieties like: PR-116, PR-114 and PR-111 mature in about 138-145 days and yield 27-28 quintal/acre. Early maturing variety PR-115 matures in 125 days and gives a yield of 25 quintal/acre. It vacates the field early for sowing potato crop, informed Dr. Gill. The PR-113 variety has bold and heavy grains and it matures in 142 days and yields 28 quintals/acre. The varieties PR-111 and PR-115 are resistant to most of the pathotypes of bacterial leaf blight pathogen prevalent in Punjab.

The variety PR-118 matures in 158 days and gives a yield of 29 quintal/acre. Its grains are medium slender with good cooking quality, informed Dr. Gill. He urged the farmers to sow only PAU recommended varieties. They should shun the varieties HKR-47 and HKR-147 which are being promoted by private agencies, as these varieties lack resistance against the blight disease.
