Pak PM guilty of contempt: SC

ISLAMABAD, April 26, 2012

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani was on Thursday held in contempt of court by the Supreme Court and sentenced till the rising of the court.

The court rose within a minute of the sentencing in the contempt case against the premier for failing to write to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Earlier, Mr. Gilani — who was accompanied by his son Ali Musa, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and other members of the cabinet — arrived at the Suprme Court, as supporters threw rose petals on him.

Heavy security has been put into place with large deployment of commandos and anti-riot police.

The premier was charged with contempt by the apex court in February for refusing to write to the Swiss authorities to ask them to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Mr. Gilani has appeared twice before in court and has maintained his innocence throughout, saying he had done nothing against the rules of business.
