Sensex up 46 points in early trade

Mumbai, March 23, 2012

The BSE benchmark index Sensex on Wednesday gained nearly 46 points in early trade on selective buying by funds.

The 30-share index, which had gained 42.81 points on Tuesday, rose further by 45.89 points, or 0.26 per cent to 17,362.07.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index moved up by 9.20 points, or 0.17 per cent, to 5,284.05.

Brokers said selective buying by funds in blue-chip stocks at prevailing levels, mainly supported the rise in Sensex.

However, they said, there weren't any strong triggers from global markets.

Stocks of consumer durables, IT, banking, capital goods and oil and gas sectors were trading in positive zone on selective buying, supporting the Sensex.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was down by 0.33 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei shed 0.42 per cent in the morning trade today. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.52 per cent lower in Tuesday's trade
