PRESIDENT OF INDIA LAUDS PAU HOME SCIENTIST

LUDHIANA, MARCH 24:-----



The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil and Union Minister of Agriculture and Food Processing Industries, Mr Sharad Pawar, have appreciated the efforts of Dr Kiranjot Sidhu, PAU Senior Scientist, in organizing, coordinating and conceiving the idea of "Innovation Market Place," during the first global conference on "Women in Agriculture," held at New Delhi from March 13 to 15. The conference was jointly organized by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and various national/international agencies.



Giving details, Dr Neelam Grewal, Dean, College of Home Science, PAU, said that about 500 delegates from 50 countries participated in the conference. Four faculty members of the college alongwith women entrepreneurs, trained by them, attended the conference. Dr Grewal said that the major highlight of the conference was the "Innovation Market Place" that showcased the products of women entrepreneurs, who were trained by the scientists of the "All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Home Science." She informed that the stalls from across the country focused on the value addition to traditional embroideries, use of drudgery reducing tools in farm, home and allied activities like bead making, dyeing with natural dyes, etc. The value addition to finger millet, horticultural produce, weaving, use of natural dyes and waste fibers were also showcased, she added.



Dr Grewal said that the deliberations focused on women empowerment for inclusive growth in agriculture. The President Smt. Patil lauded the scientists and the ICAR for enabling the women to venture into entrepreneurship and for providing them market exposure.
