Jayalalithaa envisages high growth trajectory

CHENNAI, March 23, 2012

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday unveiled 'Vision Tamil Nadu 2023\', the document laying down the plan for infrastructure development for the State to achieve the desired outcomes in 11 years.



According to the document, the three outcomes to be achieved by 2023 are: the per capita income of people of Tamil Nadu would reach $10,000 or Rs. 4,50,000 per annum (at 2010 prices), the present median income of upper middle income countries; the State would attain a high standard of social development, with the Human Development Index of the State matching those of developed countries and it would provide to its residents, high quality infrastructure all over the State comparable with the best in the world.



The document, prepared with the support of Asian Development Bank, laid down the contours of growth strategies and sectoral investment plans. It projected that the State during 2012-2023 would require totally Rs. 15 lakh crore (Rs. 13.25 lakh crore in seven broad sectors – energy, transport, industrial and commercial, urban infrastructure, agriculture and human development (health and education) and Rs. 1.75 lakh crore under general and social infrastructure projects and improvement to the existing infrastructure.



"My vision is to set Tamil Nadu on a high growth trajectory and to secure for all its people the benefits of rapid economic growth. It is in this context that we have embarked, for the first time in Tamil Nadu, on the preparation of a Vision Document for the State as a strategic plan for achieving overall development," she said, handing over the first copy to Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam at a function here.



The Chief Minister said the vision for the State for 2023 was to become, by then, India\'s most prosperous and progressive State with no poverty, and where its people would enjoy all the basic services of a modern society and live in harmonious engagement with the environment and the rest of the world. Ms Jayalalithaa, amid applause from the audience, which included captains of industry, declared: "I will not rest or give up till I realise my cherished dream or the Vision outlined in this Tamil Nadu Vision 2023 document."
