PAU ORGANISES AWARENESS CAMP ON FEMALE FOETICIDE

The Department of Human Development (HD) of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) organised an awareness camp on "Female Foeticide" in the village Ayali Kalan. The camp, organised for the rural parents, was a part of the Ph.D work of Mrs Vandana Kanwar, Assistant Professor, carried out under the guidance of Dr Jatinder K. Gulati, Prof. and Head, HD.



Deliberating on the menace of infanticide with focus on the causes and practices, Dr Gulati shed light on the current trend of female foeticide that has declined the child sex ration, particularly, in Punjab. She laid special emphasis on the importance of girl child and woman in the family.



Dr Anurag Chaudhary, Prof. and Head, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, dwelt upon the consequences of repetitive abortions, importance of nutrition for girls during their adolescent years and for young mothers during their pregnancy.



Addressing the parents, Mrs Ritu Jain, Additional District Attorney, District Courts, Ludhiana, highlighted the legal rights of the women and laws which protect and safeguard the rights of the women. She motivated the women to exercise their decision making power and their right in planning their family size, irrespective of the sex of their existing children.



During the camp, M.Sc student of HD, Rupinder recited a poem of S. Gurbhajan Gill "Rakhri di dor khatre vich." Mrs Kanwar, proposing the vote of thanks, appreciated the efforts of the staff working under Mr Jeevan Kumar, Child Development Project Officer, in organising this camp. She said that such camps will be organised in other villages also.
