National training on smart packaging techniques concludes at CIPHET

Ludhiana, October 24:



A valedictory function was today organized at the Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) on the concluding day of 14 day NAIP sponsored National training on 'Smart Packaging Techniques for Shelf Life Enhancement and Retention of Bioactive Compounds in Food' here at its campus. Total of sixteen scientists/researchers from across country took part in the training programme and Dr Eva Almenar, Assistant Professor, School of Packaging of Michigan State University of United States had especially come to update for new technological developments in active and intelligent packaging.



"During the training participants were made aware about the food packaging concepts, controlled atmosphere technology, storage structures for perishables, micro-perforation mediated improvement of package environment, need and techniques, need and techniques to establish suitable space, packaging of preshiables, using bio-based appropriate plastics in food packaging, antimicrobial active packaging of food, antioxidant active packaging of food, metallic oriented framework and permeability of thermo plastic polymers etc," revealed Dr Deepak Raj Rai, Head Transfer of Technology Division, adding that they were able to bring best resource persons from India and abroad to provide knowledge about best practices available in smart packaging and shelf life extension.



Distributing certificates to the participants, Ex Director School of Energy Studies, PAU, Ludhiana, Dr Shashipal, who was also the chief guest, said that packaging had very crucial role to play in shelf life extension of food products. Talking on latest developments in shelf life extension, he said that scientists were also working on development electronic nose, which could tell about shelf life of the particular food products by smelling. Hoping that participants would have updated their knowledge on packaging during the training programme, Director CIPHET Dr R.K Gupta said that they should use the gained knowledge in their respective areas and regions to benefit industry. He also encouraged them to come out with new projects on packaging and extension of shelf life. Dr Sangeeta Chopra presented a vote of thanks and took the feedback from the participants. Dr S.N Jha, Head AS&EC Division and other faculty members of the CIPHET were also present on the occasion.
