ADVANCE BEEKEEPING TRAINING AT PAU

LUDHIANA, OCTOBER 28:



An advance training course on "Bee Breeding and Mass Queen Bee Rearing Techniques," will be organised by the Department of Entomology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), from November 2-4. The course will see the participation of progressive beekeepers, having large apiary units and practicing innovative and scientific beekeeping.

Giving programme contours, Dr Balwinder Singh, Head, Department of Entomology, PAU, said that the experts will brush up the knowledge of the beekeepers by laying special emphasis on the importance of bee breeding, queen bee and need for mass queen bee rearing, importance and scope of diversification of beekeeping in the Punjab and selection of colonies for bee breeding and mass bee rearing. Besides, the course will educate the beekeepers about breeder, cell builder and their preparation, colony division and conventional methods of mass queen bee rearing and novel queen bee rearing techniques involving Doolittle method, Karl-Jenter and Cup-Kit systems, he added.

According to Dr P.K. Chhuneja, Technical Coordinator of the course, the course will apprise the trainees of the measures to augment drone bee population for breeding purpose, selective breeding of queen bees, techniques of establishing mating nucs, gyne cell grafting and queen bee clipping, marking and queen bee introduction. He told that the beekeepers will be imparted theoretical as well as practical knowledge on the maintenance of queen bee reservoir and preparation of bee packages.
