240 injured in Shanghai subway train collision

SHANGHAI, September 27, 2011.

A subway train rear-ended another on Tuesday in Shanghai, leaving more than 240 passengers injured, the subway operator said.

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. local time following a signal system failure at one station on the Line 10 subway, the Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said in a statement adding that about 500 passengers had been evacuated from the trains. The signal system failure meant the trains had to be directed over the phone by subway staff rather than by electric signals and run at slower speeds, it said.

Subway services at nine stations on the Line 10 have been halted, it said.
