SCIENTISTS MUST REACH OUT TO SOCIETY THROUGH EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: VIRENDER WALIA

LUDHIANA, JUNE 27:-----



One can express effectively in one\'s mother tongue. One should not have any inferiority complex while communicating in one\'s own language. This was stated by Mr. Virender Walia, Editor Punjabi Tribune while delivering his address in the concluding function of 21 day orientation course on \'Science communication through media: recent trends\', organized by the Center for Communication and International Linkages (CCIL) of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The programme was sponsored by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and catalyzed by the National Council for Science Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.



Mr. Walia said that one might learn as many languages as possible but can be most effective communicator if he or she uses the mother toungue. The communicator should use simple language so that the message is well grasped by the receiver, he said and highlighted that the scientists should not confine within their laboratories and arena of scientific activities but should also communicate their scientific output for the benefit of society. Quoting from the well known Mera Daaghistan by Gamza Tov, Mr. Walia said that we should develop our faculties to reach out to the masses through nurturing effective communication skills. The organization of orientation courses to provide useful tips to the trainees prove immensely beneficial to develop their communication skills, he said. It is an offence to use difficult language that may hamper effective communication, observed Mr. Walia and shared his experiences at PAU, his alma mater, where every stone, every tree, every flower bed, every monument seems to be communicating something special, he said. Mr. Walia congratulated the PAU, CCIL for organizing a course on communication skills with a broad-based programme to benefit the trainees.



Dr. Gursharan Singh, Dean, Postgraduate Studies, PAU presided over the concluding function. In his remarks, he said that communication was vital for everyone. He wished that the expert deliberations made in the orientation course would immensely help in the day to day scientific communication of the participants. Dr. N.S.Malhi, former Director of Extension Education, who was the guest of honour, said that one should stay focused while communicating and that a positive attitude is an added ingredient in effective communication. The good communicator is generally more confident and has a place of advantage in the society.





Mr. Harjit Singh, an eminent film producer and former Assistant Director of Doordarshan Kendra, Jalandhar, who was present on the occasion said that he was among the students group that performed bhangra when PAU was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister. He said that he has seen the University grow over the years to an international level and said that the effective communication had been responsible for the translation of technologies to the farmers fields. He said that more orientation courses should be organized to brush up the communication skills to PAU teachers. Mr. Ashwani Chaitley, former programme director, Northern Cultural Center said that he had the privilege to welcome Pandit Nehru by presenting a rose bud to him during the function to inaugurate PAU. He said that he will be glad to offer any service in connection with the celebration of golden jubilee of PAU in 1912. A noted Punjabi poet and singer, Mr. Trailochan Lochi recited his composition \'dheean taan kavitawan hundian\' and enthralled the audience.



Earlier, Dr. Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Additional Director of Communication and the Course Director presented an overview of the programme activities held during the past 21 days. He said that similar programmes will also be held in the future for the benefit of PAU teachers. Dr. (Mrs.) Narinder Kaur and Dr. Sarabjit Singh, two participants shared their reflections about the course and said that they have found the programme extremely beneficial. The chief guest, Mr. Walia was presented with set of PAU publications by the course director. Mr. Gurbhajan Singh Gill, Editor Punjabi presented his vote of thanks to the chief guest, guest of honours, other dignitaries, participants and the sponsors. Dr Nirmal Jaura, Coordinator, earlier introduced the guests to the participants. Present on the occasion, were the Deans, Directors, Officers and Heads of various PAU departments.
