PAU FLORICULTURISTS GIVE TIPS FOR MAINTENANCE AND CARE OF ORNAMENTALS

LUDHIANA, JUNE 27:-----

The floriculturists of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), honing the knowledge of farmers about the maintenance of ornamentals, told that with the commencement of rainy season, the plants of ornamental trees, shrubs and creepers can be planted in the well-prepared pits. The size of the pits for trees should be 3'x3'x3' and for shrubs and creepers 2.2 x 2.2 x 2.2. Propagation of most of the shrubs like hibiscus, chandni, bougainvillea, hamelia, jatropha, etc., can be done through terminal cuttings, said they and added that in order to save the cuttings against rot, the same may be treated with some recommended fungicide. Bavistin ( 2 g per liter of water) solution is helpful to protect the cuttings against rots.

PAU Head of the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, Dr Kushal Singh, advised that if the sky is cloudy and it is drizzling, the indoor pot plants may occasionally be brought out into the open. This will induce new life into the plants. In case of over grown potted plants, the same can be multiplied after taking them out from the pots, dividing them and repotting by using fresh and rich mixture of soil and farm yard manure (FYM).

Referring to the maintenance of lawns, farm varsity expert Dr Ranjit Singh, suggested that if some piece of land is prepared well in the last month for grassing, the same can be grassed now. Small bunches of grassroots of some desired variety are dibbled 10-15 cm apart, said he and asked the farmers to press them and irrigate immediately, until the grass is well-established. He also advised to irrigate it with the help of sprinkler. The irrigation may be planned keeping in view whether it is raining or not.

Pointing to chrysanthemum and canna, the floriculture experts said that the plantation of terminal cuttings of chrysanthemum in pure sand or in the burnt rice husk can be continued. Such cuttings planted last month, must have thrown out roots by this time and the same can be transplanted in the pots or in the beds as per requirement. The subject-matter specialists also told that canna rhizomes, which were taken out of the soil, can now be replanted in the well- prepared beds at a distance of 50-60 cm from row to row and plant to plant.
