OPTIMUM SPACING FOR KINNOW PLANTATION VITAL: PAU SCIENTISTS

LUDHIANA, JUNE 23:-----

"Kinnow is numero uno fruit sustaining horticulture industry in Punjab. The cultivation of kinnow mandarin in North-West region of India has become quite popular amongst the fruit growers. Easy adaptability to varied agro-climatic conditions, heavy bearing potential and excellent juice quality characters of kinnow have boosted its cultivation," expressed PAU scientists. Equipping the farming community with the in-depth understanding of the optimum spacing required for kinnow plantation for obtaining better economic returns, Dr P.K. Monga observed that it has always been an important issue.

Dr P.S. Aulakh, Head, Department of Horticulture said that throughout the citrus producing regions of the world, there has always been discussion regarding the proper spacing of trees in order to maximizing returns. Decisions about optimum tree spacing have always been difficult and usually result in a great degree of compromise. He added that the spacing with number of trees per acre result in high early production, while wider spacing give high production later.

Suggesting the farmers, Dr Nirmaljit Kaur divulged, "To find out the optimum spacing for kinnow cultivation, comprehensive studies were undertaken for 24 years with different spacing, viz., 20'x10,' 20'x15,' 20'x20,' 22'x22' and 25'x25.' Based on the studies, high density plantation (20'x10') of kinnow is recommended to obtain higher fruit yield." Dr Kaur advised that these trees should be widened at 15th year of age by removing the alternate trees, keeping (20'x20') spacing to prolong the life expectancy of kinnow orchards.

The varsity scientists told that the high density of plantation of kinnow (20'x10') will improve the fruit yield per unit area, as a result, of which orchardist will be economically benefited.
