PAU FELICITATES DISTINGUISHED SPORTSPERSONS

LUDHIANA, MARCH 31:

In recognition of the achievements in the field of sports for the session 2009-10 and 2010-11, the Sports Committee of the College of Agriculture (COA), PAU, today honored the distinguished sports persons at a function organized here.



The chief guest, Yurinder Singh Hayer, Deputy Commissioner Police, Ludhiana, speaking on this occasion, exhorted the students to develop sportsmanship spirit. Congratulating the prize-winning sportspersons, he said that participation in sports and extra-curricular activities along with academics helps in all round personality development of the students. Calling upon the youth to follow righteous path in life, he advised them to be disciplined citizens by being on the right side of the law. He appreciated the girls for excelling in sports. An alumnus of PAU, Mr Hayer, said "I share an old relationship with PAU and consider it as my family".



In his presidential remarks, Dr Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, said that PAU students have brought laurels to the institution by excelling in sports and cultural activities at national/state/intervarsity/university level by clinching positions/ medals during 2009-10 and 2010-11. There was no dearth of talent in PAU, added he, while stating that felicitating the sportspersons will encourage and boost their morale to participate in sports and other activities more vigorously.



Dr D.S.Cheema, Dean, COA, welcoming the chief guest, presiding officer and the prize winners, said that the function has been organized to honour the sportspersons for their outstanding performance in different games/events. Besides honouring the cultural awardees (2009-10 and 2010-11) for clinching top positions in mime and clay modeling at All-India inter-varsity level, 23 sports awardees of the year 2009-10 and 16 of the year 2010-11 have also been honoured today. He added that students have won gold, silver and bronze medals in hockey, swimming, badminton, discuss throw, javelin throw, volleyball, basket ball, athletics and cricket.



Dr Manjit Singh Mahal, Ex-President, Sports Committee, PAU, highlighted the sports achievements of COA. He said that the university has produced three great hockey players - Charanjeet Singh, Pritipal Singh and Ramandeep Singh(all winners of Padma Awards and other prestigious awards). The PAU honoured them by dedicating the 'Olympian Marg' to these sports stalwarts. The four constituent colleges of PAU bagged 153 roll of honours and out of this, COA won 73 medals in various games / co-curricular activities. Dr Mahal revealed that PAU has created 21 new records in athletics including 16 of COA.



On this occasion, Dr Mahal was honored for rendering valuable service to COA sports activities and excellence in cricket as BCCI/international Umpire. Dr Kanwal Mahindra, Associate Director (Extension education) was also bestowed with honour for his contribution in cultural activities. Present on the occasion were, registrar, deans, directors, additional directors, heads and faculty of various departments of PAU.
