Violence mars West Bengal Youth Congress polls

08 Mar 2011

Pandemonium broke out at the venue of the West Bengal Youth Congress committee elections in Kolkata on Monday as supporters of a losing candidate went on a rampage, breaking furniture, upturning tables and chasing people with rods and flag poles.

Congress MP Mousam Benazir Noor, who was elected as state Youth Congress chief, alleged that bombs were hurled and some people tried to attack her.

The election at the Nazrul Mancha in south Kolkata saw Mausam defeat Arindam Bhattacharya who had the backing of Deepa Dasmunshi, wife of ailing Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi.

Soon after the results were announced, Youth Congress activists owing allegiance to the losing candidate forced their way onto the dais and went on rampage. They broke chairs, tore up cloth used to decorate the stage and beat up some of the Congress workers with rods and flag poles.

\"I have heard sounds of bomb blasts. They tried to attack me but I was escorted out by my supporters. Later on I was escorted to police station for safety. I have informed the high command about the incident and also informed the state Congress president,\" Mausam said.
