Keeping in view the importance of vegetables in the human diet, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has produced the vegetable seed kit which can be a unique, useful and an ideal gift for the dear-ones. Being sold on the marginal prices of Rs 60 per kit, the kits are of two types namely, summer season kit and winter season kit, divulged Dr S.S.Bal, Director of Seeds, PAU, while stating that the practice will benefit the health of the people. He said that the available kit will be for summer season.
PAU scientist Dr Hira Singh, giving details, added that summer season vegetable kit includes seeds of cucurbits (cucumber, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, tinda), okra, cowpea, radish, etc. while the winter vegetable kit contains leafy vegetables (methi, menthe, coriander, palak), root vegetables (turnip, radish, carrot), pea, etc. Information regarding their sowing time and name of variety is also provided on the chits within the kits, for the knowledge and information of people, who will it useful in the cultivation of the vegetables in their plots or kitchen gardens.
Another scientist from PAU Directorate of Seeds, Dr Rajinder Singh informed that the interested people can contact the Seed Shop at PAU Farmers Service Center to purchase the vegetable kits. He added that sweets and fruits are common when one chooses the gift, but the vegetable kit has its own uniqueness and the kits are available during Kisan Melas (Farmers' fair) at various centers including – Ballowal Saunkhri (Near Balachaur), Rauni (Patiala), Gurdaspur, Bathinda and Ludhiana. The summer season vegetable kits are provided during Kisan Melas in March while the winter vegetable kits during September, said he. People can purchase the vegetable seed kits from these Kisan Melas and take delight of presenting them to their dears and nears as a unique gift.
