Libyan envoy to hold talks in Athens

Athens, March 10, 2011

A Libyan envoy was meeting with Greece's deputy foreign minister and the ministry's secretary general on Thursday, as part of an apparent Libyan diplomatic blitz ahead of a European Union meeting to discuss the upheaval in the country.

Mohamed Tahir Siala was meeting with the deputy minister, Dimitris Dollis, and Loannis Zeppos, which comes after similar talks were held in Lisbon with Portugal's Foreign Minister Luis Amado on Wednesday night.

He did not make any statements as he arrived at the Foreign Ministry in central Athens.

The Greek ministry said the meeting was arranged in agreement with European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton ahead of the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels later on Thursday.

Greece has traditionally had good relations with Libya and its leader Moammar Qadhafi, with whom Prime Minister George Papandreou held talks during a visit there last summer.

Mr. Papandreou received a phone call from Col. Qadhafi on Tuesday night, and urged the Libyan leader to do all he could to stop further bloodshed and a descent into full—blown civil war.

On Wednesday, another envoy - a high—ranking member of the Libyan military - flew to Cairo with a message from the embattled Qadhafi.
