City lensman dies, 3 scribes seriously injured in accident

A photojournalist died and three correspondents of The Times of India sustained serious injuries on Saturday midnight when the Maruti Zen car, in which they were travelling, collided head-on with a truck on the Kharar-Ludhiana stretch of National Highway-95 near Khanpur village.



All four were posted in Ludhiana. They were on their way to Chandigarh to attend a meeting of the newspaper scheduled to be held on Sunday morning.



While Aditya Jaitley (27) succumbed to injuries during treatment, Naveen Kalia (27) and V Venkat (30) are struggling for life at PGI in Chandigarh, investigating officer ASI Sikander Singh told Newsline. The third injured, Sandeep Dua (27), was shifted from PGI to Ludhiana on the request of his family.



Aditya, a resident of Shimlapuri in Ludhiana, was working as a staff photographer. Son of Ashwani Jaitley, the Ludhiana bureau chief of Daily Ajit newspaper, Aditya is survived by his wife and parents.



While senior staff correspondent Venkat, a resident of Gurdev Nagar, heads the Ludhiana city team of the newspaper, Sandeep, who lives in Khanna near Ludhiana, and Naveen of Fatehgarh Churian in Gurdaspur work as correspondents in the city.



Sandeep has sustained a fracture in his nose and injuries on the face and other body parts, Venkat and Naveen sustained multiple fractures in the limbs and ribs. According to doctors, all three will have to undergo major surgeries. "If the surgeries go well, Sandeep may take about five months to recover. Venkat and Naveen's recovery will take more than a year," said a colleague of the injured, quoting doctors.
