03 Mar 2011

In yet another dreadful incident, NREGA activist Niyamat Ansari was beaten to death at Latehar district in Jharkhand.

Ansari, who worked for the implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, was beaten to death on Wednesday night by some unidentified assailants.

Assailants dragged him out of his house and left him in a critical state after beating him brutally.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital by some locals but succumbed to his injuries on the way.

The police suspects Naxals and local contractors hand behind the killing.

The whistleblower had exposed a case of embezzlement of NREGA funds on February 20.

NREGS is the flagship scheme of the government for the poor and aims at enhancing livelihood security of people in rural belts by guaranteeing 100 days of wage-employment in a financial year to a rural household.
