AMERICAN SCIENTIST CONGRATULATES PAU FOR FETCHING \'BEST FARM VARISTY\' AWARD

Non-resident Indians (NRIs) and alumni of PAU and scientists from different parts of globe are congratulating Dr. Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, for PAU being adjudged as the Best Agricultural University of 2011 and bagging \'Krishi Shiksha Samman\' launched by Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. Dr. Amarjit Singh Basra, a scientist of Monsanto Company at the American city, St. Lews and a recipient of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Prize of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, while congratulating him said that PAU has taken new initiative in agricultural research, education and technology transfer that have put the University on a new trajectory of progress, successfully.

While expressing compliments to Dr. Kang, Dr. Basra has appreciated the vision of the Punjab Chief Minister, S. Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister, S. Sukhbir Singh Badal and Agriculture Minister, S. Sucha Singh Langah for their pro-agricultural policies and programmes. It is a befitting recognition that these leaders have applauded PAU for being a leader and a fast adopter in agricultural education, outreach and technology, said Dr. Basra. In his congratulatory message, Dr. Basra said that with the farsighted vision and leadership of Dr. Kang, PAU is counted amongst the top ranking farm Universities internationally. Dr. Basra has mentioned that he feels elated and elevated due to the reason that he had been a student and a teacher at this great University.

To satiate the requirements of food security of our burgeoning population, the reprioritized programmes for agricultural education, research and transfer of technology at the national level, more investment in scientific R & D is required, said Dr. Basra. With food scarcity, prices and inflation on the rise our food security could be in jeopardy, if we do not accord priority to investment in agricultural education, research and development, observed he. For the fulfillment of the broader dreams of Chief Minister S. Badal, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Kang started the new programmes of six-year B. Sc. Agriculture and Home Science inviting more of rural students at PAU, said he adding that the rural students have generally enhanced enthusiasm to add to their existing knowledge about farming. Making reference to the world famous rice breeder and winner of world food prize, Dr. Gurdev Singh Khush, Dr. Basra expressed that the contributions and scientific input of Dr. Khush are well known and said that the inputs of Dr. Kang to take agriculture to the new global perspective will be remembered for long. He said that with the initiative of Dr. Kang, PAU entered into accords with several well known Universities globally and that the arrangement is expected to produce results. Appreciating his vision, Dr. Basra said that the way the efforts of Dr. P.N.Thapar and Dr. M.S.Randhawa had helped usher in an era of green revolution in Punjab, the time is not far when people will consider the efforts of Dr. Kang to bring PAU on the list of leading Universities of the world, with great esteem. He congratulated the administration, scientific fraternity and students at PAU for the success of PAU.
