ALUMNI OF BATCH 1951- 1955 B.SC AGRI MEET AT PAU

LUDHIANA, MARCH 24:-----

A get together of B.Sc Agriculture (1951-1955) batch of College of Agriculture, Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), was held here today. The recollection of the student life was a moment of nostalgia for the participating alumni.

Calling PAU as the 'Harbinger of Green Revolution,' Dr B.S. Ahloowalia from Vienna, Austria, said that the university has played a pivotal role in agricultural development by wiping out the food-deficiency and making the nation food-surplus. As 61 years are going to pass, he said that the need of the hour is to provide agriculture knowledge-based education to young generation. The city students should be taken to the selected village farms to acquaint them with the new innovations, farming techniques and technologies. Villages need to be computerized by introducing database system, added he. Dr Ahloowalia observed that the government should strengthen research and development programmes in agriculture.

Dr Dalbir Singh Dev, former Dean, College of Agriculture and a pioneer in the development of poultry farming in Punjab, said that according to the changing times, change of the goal is of utmost importance. With the new fields like biotechnology, precision farming, post-harvest technology coming up in agriculture, there is a need to review the academic curriculum and readjust the focus on main problems.

Dr Arjan Singh, former Additional Director of Agriculture, Haryana, and Dr Tehal Singh Sidhu, former PAU Extension Specialist, expressing their concern for the rural youth, adding that the state is facing the problem of labour shortage for the last many years. Farmers in rural areas are not getting due return of their produce, which is resulting in the deep frustration and disparities. They warned that there will be more problems of the class distinction in the near future.

The alumni hailed the participation of farm women in the farm operations and agricultural education programmes. All of them were excited and keenly waiting for the golden jubilee celebrations of PAU in 2012. The old science graduates expressed their serious concern over the repeated division of PAU. First Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) was carved out of PAU and now another attempt is being made to further usurp its land.

Other alumni present on the occasion were Bikkar Singh Sandhu (former Senior Soil Scientist, PAU), Gian Singh Dhesi (retd. As Deputy Director Agriculture for oilseeds, Punjab), Hari Kumar (Entrepreneur), Raghubir Singh Mangat (former Chief Horticulturist for Parks, Alta Government, Canada) and Tirath Singh (Ex-Statistician, PAU). They shared their reminiscences of student life and felt proud that PAU has been adjudged as the Best Agricultural University of India.
