Withdrew phone tape charges for humanitarian reasons’

Feb 11 2011,Kanpur:

Former Samajwadi Party leader and national head of the Rashtriya Lok Manch Amar Singh said on Thursday that he had filed his affidavit in the Supreme Court to withdraw the charges against UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the Congress in phone-tapping case for humanitarian reasons.

Speaking to media persons in Kakadev area in Kanpur, Singh said since he was satisfied with the Delhi police investigation which found that neither the Congress nor Sonia Gandhi was responsible for the tapping of his phone, he decided to file the affidavit. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had reprimanded Amar Singh for wasting its time.

"I respect the Supreme Court and have nothing more to say on the issue," Amar Singh added.

Singh was in the city to meet the families of Fatehpur girl Sarika and Unnao girl Poonam, both of whom had suffered grievous injuries while resisting rape attempts. Both are undergoing medical treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital. He provided financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each to both families. Thereafter, he met Sonu Singh Bhadoria, mother of school girl Divya who died after a brutal sexual assault in her school a few month ago.

Singh said the law and order situation in Bahujan Samaj Party regime was far better when compared to the tenure of the Samajwad Party. "In the SP tenure, the situation had dipped to such an extent that in broad daylight a party representative had shot dead a BSP legislator in Allahabad," he said.

He also said Chief Minister Mayawati has taken the initiative to get her party legislator from Naraini arrested for the rape of the Banda girl. He said justice was done in Divya Singh's case in Kanpur.
