SYMPOSIUM ON SHORT ROTATION FORESTRY AT PAU

LUDHIANA, FEBRUARY 9:(Saggu)

Keeping in view the significance and growing interest among researchers and development workers around the world on short rotation forestry (SRF), the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, PAU, is organizing a three-day IUFRO symposium on 'Short Rotation Forestry: Synergies for Wood Production and Environmental Amelioration' from February 10-12 in conjunction with the International Year of Forestry 2011. The symposium, being held under the aegis of BENWOOD, European Commission, has been designed to bring together the scientists, managers, industrialists, conservationists, NGOs, etc., for exchanging their experiences and their future endeavors on the subject.

Giving an overview, Dr Avtar Singh, Head of the Department said that the main themes of the symposium include – a) SRF resources, their management and GHG mitigation potential b) ecological implications, invasive species and biodiversity c) bio-energy and phyto-remediation and d) marketing, stakeholders vision and capabilities. He further informed that the eminent scientists such as Dr B Hannel, IUFRO Coordinator, Silviculture, Dr JW Dubas (Poland), Dr Davorin Kajba (Croatia), Dr Tatsuya Otani, FRIM Malaysia, Dr P Liebhard, BOKU Vienna (Austria) and scientists and progressive tree growers from various parts of the country will be participating in the symposium.

Dr Singh added that the SRF being the rapid silvicultural practice to reforest areas enhances farm income from subsistence farming and mitigates adverse influence of global climate change. It is a system for optimal utilization of natural resources using theoretical and practical knowledge on biological, physical aspects in an ecological acceptable manner, said he adding that this practice meets ever growing wood and energy requirements, generates employment and also acts as source of carbon sink. The SRF helps in saving the virgin forests' wealth and act as vegetation filter, he elaborated highlighting that the potential of forests (natural or plantation) in mitigating the greenhouse gases has fully been realized and the collaboration at international level started with the concept that air pollution does not need passport to crossover the geographical boundaries of the country.
