PUNJAB AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY,TRAINED AGRICULTURAL MAN POWER WILL HAVE HUG DEMAND: DR. QAYYUM

LUDHIANA, FEBRUARY 7:-----

There has been a sea transformation in agriculture. The generation of technologies in terms of new input responsive varieties, pro-agriculture policies of government, need-based infrastructure, hard working farmers were all responsible for this transformation. These views were expressed by Prof. Dr. Hafiz Abdul Qayyum from University of Agriculture, Faislabad (Pakistan) who is on a visit to PAU for participation in the international conference on climate change. Dr. Qayyum, while interacting with B. Sc. Agriculture second year students said that they were lucky to have their education at a reputed University, PAU. He said that the trained man power will have huge demand in government, semi-government and private sector. He advised students to take interest in knowing the practical agriculture. Dr. Qayyum called it a welcome step that more and more girls are coming in agricultural education and research. He suggested that the PAU and University of Agriculture, Faislabad should have programmes for exchange of faculty and students. He called PAU as a daughter University of University of Agriculture, Faislabad and expressed happiness that it has excelled as a top agricultural university in the region.



Prof. Dr. Zahid Ata Cheema, Professor of Agronomy at University of Agriculture, Faislabad said that the common agricultural issues in the region, may it be global warming or issues in the face of contemporary agriculture need to be discussed by the scientists and to arrive at solutions through joint efforts. Dr. Cheema said that he was impressed to know the credibility that Punjab farmers have in PAU scientists.



The PAU Dean, College of Agriculture, Dr. D.S.Cheema said that the six year B. Sc. Agriculture programme at PAU has attracted students from rural areas. He provided an overview of curricular programmes of the College.



The Additional Director of Communication, Dr. Jagtar Singh Dhiman provided information to the visitors on the PAU programme of dissemination of field worthy knowledge to the farmers through electronic and print media. Dr. Qayyum appreciated that PAU is bringing out low cost publications on different crops and allied agricultural ventures. He said that the PAU Agricultural Handbook is well sought after publication for him. He visited the Center for Communication and International Linkages and the Dr. M.S.Randhawa Art Gallery where an exhibition of portraits \'Faith\' by Australian Artist Danniel Connell is ongoing. Dr. Nirmal Jaura, Deputy Director (PR) introduced Dr. Qayyum and Dr. Cheema to the students.
