(PAU) CSISA EXPERTS DISCUSS CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE

LUDHIANA, FEBRUARY 21:



The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT)-led Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and United States Agency for International Development (USIAD) held its 4th Hub Managers' meet in the city today. The meet would continue till February 23. With the theme 'capture and share knowledge,' the focus has been on effective delivery mechanism and adaptive research on conservation agriculture (CA)-based technologies and to generate synergy between different hub teams. To address the emerging challenges before the South Asian agriculture and farmers in the region, the deliberations were held to scale out CA-based technologies for the benefit of the farmers. The meeting is being attended by the IRRI, CIMMYT, CSISA teams from across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Philippines and Mexico.



Speaking on this occasion, the chief guest Er BS Sidhu, Director of Agriculture, Punjab, emphasized on the need to develop economically viable and technologically suitable solutions for sustainable agriculture.



The guest of honour Mr KS Sangha, Joint Registrar, Department of Cooperatives, Jalandhar, said that as the CSISA project is promoting technologies in line with Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), therefore, such initiatives would be beneficial for the small and marginal farmers.



Dr Patrick Wall, Director, Conservation Agriculture Program, CIMMYT, co-chaired the session. Sharing is global experiences on conservation agriculture, he stressed that PAU being a strong partner with the project, should start a course on CA for undergraduate students.



Mr MS Rao, CEO-CSISA, laid emphasis on the need to capture and share the learning's for cross fertilization, synthesis and deeper synergy. Dr Raj Gupta, CIMMYT-India, South Asia Coordinator, and Dr M.L.Jat , Senior Cropping System Agronomist ( CIMMYT) gave an overview of progress in the hubs with a focus on last-mile delivery.



Dr HS Sidhu, CSISA Hub Manager, Punjab hub, in his vote of thanks said that the project is greatly relevant to conserving and prudently using natural resource base for sustainable agriculture. He shared the specific technologies developed and recommended by PAU.
