KHARIF WORKSHOP – EXPERTS DISCUSS ABOUT PACKAGE OF PRACTICES FOR OILSEEDS, MILLETS AND SUGARCANE

A two-day research and extension specialists' workshop for Kharif Crops concluded today at PAU. Chairing the technical session on 'oil seeds, maize, forages and millets,' Dr S.S. Gosal, Director of Research, PAU, said that research is a continuous process. The state level functionaries should advocate farmers to go in for PAU varieties and technologies. He remarked that Rural Development Fund (RDF) of state government will facilitate research programs in a need-based manner. The session witnessed presentations by experts on package of practices for oil seeds, maize, forage and millets. The specific queries by participating Agricultural Development Officers were addressed by PAU subject matter specialists. Dr. Gosal said that PAU will consider the feed back in the formulation of research programmes. The technical session on 'Sugarcane, new crops, agricultural engineering and economics' was chaired by Dr MS Gill, Director of Extension Education, PAU. In his remarks, he said that the experts deliberated on latest package of practices for different kharif crops and that the field worthy technologies should be disseminated to the farmers. He added that the feedback received from field functionaries of Department of Agriculture, Punjab, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and outstations of PAU prove highly useful in reorienting programs for the benefit of the farmers. The session saw discussions on package of practices of sugarcane, new crop (turmeric), improved agricultural implements and economics of kharif crops. Earlier, the participants visited the experimental area of PAU where the subject experts demonstrated on new varieties and latest technology development by PAU scientists. The queries of the participants pertaining to the use of leaf colour chart (LCC) and tensiometer with respect to saving of nitrogen fertilizer and irrigation water in paddy were responded by PAU experts. Dr. Gill said that the department of agriculture Punjab and PAU extension personnel can reach to help transfer the need based technologies to the un-reached.
