Jayalalithaa\'s statement on Raja arrest

Chennai:

Hours after he was summoned to the CBI headquarters for questioning, former Telecom Minister A Raja was arrested for his alleged role in the 2G spectrum scam.

The Congress quickly asserted that the arrest of the DMK leader will not impact its alliance with Mr Raja\'s party in Tamil Nadu; the BJP focused on describing the action against Mr Raja as \"too little, too late.\"And across the political board, all players agree that the arrest is an attempt by the government to rebut charges that it has not acted against corruption - a refrain of the Opposition over the last few months.

AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa today issued an statement over the arrest of A Raja. Here is complete statement issued by her:

The arrest of former Union Telecom Minister Andimuthu Raja today in connection with the 2-G Spectrum scam at this late date smacks of pure theatrics by the CBI in the face of pressure from the Supreme Court of India to show results in an investigation that has been gathering dust for close to two years. It is a clear case of \"too little, too late\"! This arrest only raises more questions than it answers. Many questions have been left unanswered.

This arrest seems to be a ruse to hoodwink the public and also to tell the Supreme Court that some action has been taken with regard to the Spectrum 2- G Scam.

The AIADMK\'s demand for a JPC stands, more so because the Government of India has contradicted itself several times over.

The CAG is an arm of the Government. The CAG\'s report, tabled in Parliament, said that an enormous scam had been perpetrated, causing a loss of over Rs.1,76,000 crores to the Nation.

Next, Mr. Kapil Sibal, we presume, was also speaking on behalf of the Central Government as Union Telecom Minister, when he stated that no loss had been caused to the Nation by Raja - in fact, the words he used were \"Zero loss\".

Now, the CBI, another arm of the Government, has arrested Raja.

If Raja had done nothing wrong, then why has he been arrested by the CBI?

The purpose of the arrest becomes all the more suspect against the background of a clean chit given by Raja\'s successor in office, Kapil Sibal, who used all the legal skullduggery at his command to claim that not even a rupee had been lost by the Nation despite the patently fraudulent actions initiated by Raja while allotting valuable 2-G Spectrum to a whole lot of letterpad companies. Sibal\'s defence of Raja came after the Comptroller & Auditor General of India, the Central Vigilance Commission, the High Court of Delhi and several other Constitutional bodies had held that several irregularities had been committed in the allocation of telecom licences by Raja. What is Kapil Sibal\'s stand now? Does he stand by what he said? Or will he come up with another bout of convoluted reasoning?

If the CBI\'s intentions are genuine, a lot more persons should have been arrested by now. Niira Radia, executives of several telecom companies that benefited from the fraud, Karunanidhi\'s daughter Kanimozhi and her mother Rajathi, who have all been recorded as accomplices of Raja in perpetrating the world\'s largest scam should all be behind bars. This has not been done.

So I am inclined to believe that both the CBI and the Congress-led UPA Government are trying to give an impression that they are taking action according to law in this issue. The Congress is also possibly using the arrest as a pressure tactic to get a better deal from the DMK during seat-sharing talks for the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. But, in the final analysis, I shall be satisfied only if the UPA accedes to the joint opposition demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the scam.
