GO GREEN’ AT PAU – BIKE LIBRARY ‘PAU PEDALS’ LAUNCHED

LUDHIANA,

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Vice-Chancellor, Dr Manjit Singh Kang today inaugurated a bike library 'PAU Pedals,' a programme introduced by PAU in collaboration with Hero Cycles Ltd.

Speaking on this occasion, Dr Kang remarked that PAU has played a pivotal role in ushering of green revolution. Similarly, the green bicycles with green logo and green environment at PAU will promote health-friendly mode of mobility. The clean and green atmosphere of university gives a breather to the lungs of city- dwellers, who throng the campus for morning and evening walk, said Dr Kang. The Manchester of India - Ludhiana is flooded with cars and other motor vehicles. Realizing the benefits of bicycle, its a good opportunity for students, faculty and the general public, to make full use of it, said Dr. Kang. He shared that bike culture has already been promoted in several US Universities in California and also at Colorado State University. Dr. Kang appreciated the Hero Cycle for the support they have given to the making of common cause at PAU. Dr. Kang elaborated that the logo of, \'PAU pedals\' was selected based on the competition held in the University. He appreciated Ms Heidi Exline, a Fulbright Scholar at PAU, for her efforts in getting the logo selected. Dr. Kang said that the launching of the bicyle club that is PAU pedals is something new that he wished will be made use of increasing number of people.

Mr OP Munjal, Chairman, Hero Cycles, stated that the PAU Pedals aims at creating awareness among the people about the rising vehicular pollution and cycling, being environment friendly, is the best facility. He added that beginning is always small and today given hundred bicycles will multiply into thousands tomorrow. He offered to support the similar efforts of the University in the times to come also. There is an alarming level of congestion on the roads, he said adding that the efforts like promoting the use of bicycles, will reduce congestion, besides taking care of environmental pollution and human health.

Ms Heidi, said that roads are not created only for cars, but for people and bicycles also. Ludhiana is the centre of bicycles and everyone should avail the opportunity of bike club. She added the participation of staff is involved everywhere but the students are left. The bike library saw the participation of PAU students as the logo 'PAU Pedals' has been designed by them.

Earlier, Dr PPS Lubana, Estate Officer, welcomed Dr Kang, OP Munjal, Dr. Bikram Gill, Mr. S.K. Rai, Managing Director, Hero Cycles, Mr. A.K. Bawa, Senior General Manager, Public City, Mr. DS Chawla, President of Bicycle Association, deans, directors, Additional directors, coordinators, heads and faculty of various departments of PAU. He said that launching of bicycle club is a health promoting campaign and service will be provided to public, staff and students free of cost.

Dr (Mrs) Jaswinder Sangha, Librarian, PAU, stated that the bike library will take care of all issues be it health, environment or efficiency. She exhorted everybody including calorie conscious people to make best use of bicycles. At the end, she proposed a vote of thanks. The Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Kang, and other dignitaries rode the bicycles after Mr. O.P.Munjal flagged off the contingent after formally launching the PAU pedals.
