Farmers from Himachal Pradesh got fish farming training at GADVASU

College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized a 5-days training programme on "Fish farming" for the farmers of district Una, Himachal Pradesh under the leadership of Dr K.S Sandhu, Director Extension Education, GADVASU. A group of 12 farmers led by Mr. Ashok Kumar Verma, Assistant Director Fisheries, Fish Farmer's Development Agency, District Una, attended the training programme.

Dr. Asha Dhawan, Dean College of Fisheries, discussed the present status and scope of fisheries development in inland states with special reference to adoption of eco-friendly sustainable technologies for aquaculture productivity enhancement. The participants were imparted technical knowhow for different aquaculture practices like carp fish farming, quality carp seed production with special reference to brood stock management, breeding techniques and nursery pond management, water quality and health management for higher productivity, fish feed formulation and feeding strategies, catfish breeding and seed production, fresh water prawn culture, ornamental fish breeding and seed production, aquarium making, aquarium management, integrated fish farming with livestock and agriculture, post harvest processing and value addition, Azolla culture, recycling of dairy waste water through duckweed based bio-remediation technology and conservation of natural fisheries resources was provided through presentations, hands on training and demonstrations by the faculty of College of Fisheries.

Visit of participants to the fish farms of some progressive fish farmers in village Nanokey near Nabha and village Payal, district Ludhiana were also conducted. According to Dr Meera D Ansal, technical coordinator of the training programme, all the participants showed great zeal and interest to share their experiences with the local fish farmers. They were delighted to meet local progressive fish farmer, Mr. Ranjodh singh Grewal, Village Nanokey, recipient of Best Fish Farmer Award conferred by GADVASU (in 2010), who is supplying about 2 crores of good quality carp seed to Himachal Pradesh annually not only for the farmers but also for ranching (stocking) of natural waters. Visit to a fish cum pig farming integrated unit of another progressive farmer Mr. Jasbir Singh near village Payal in district Ludhiana also boosted their enthusiasm to take up integrated farming for higher profits. Group discussion among the farmers from the two states had been very fruitful in terms of technology sharing and transfer.

Feedback with suggestions from the participants were recorded for impact assessment and further improvement to make the trainings more farmers friendly. All the participants not only appreciated the efforts made by GADVASU in conducting the training programme on fish farming, but also requested for conducting special training programmes in culture and breeding of ornamental fishes and processing and value addition of carps for the farmers of Himachal Pradesh in the near future. A compendium of lecture delivered during the training programme was prepared for distribution among the participants.
