DR. SRAON FROM CALIFORNIA VISITS PAU, INTERACTS WITH DR. KANG

Sustainability of Punjab agriculture depends upon scientific innovations, prudent use of resources and need based technologies. This was stated by Dr. Harbans S. Sraon, Chief Executive Officer of Akal Corporation, San Jose, California, USA, who visited PAU today. Interacting with Dr. Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, Dr. Sraon shared his experiences that he had at PAU as student and as a research worker. The work culture at PAU had been excellent and there was a lot to learn from seniors said Dr. Sraon adding that wherever I am in the world, my heart remains connected with PAU. He said that at California, there is a PAU association that organizes get togethers when any body from PAU happens to be there. \'We owe a great deal to PAU\' said he and invited Dr. Kang to California. Dr. Sraon, said that PAU is a unique University that has been nurtured by scientists of the caliber of Dr. D.S. Athwal, Dr. G.S. Khus, Dr. Kang and many more and that it is being held in high esteem every where. He shared how he used to work in the fields on varieties of wheat resistant to rusts. Dr. Sraon said that the development of Kalyansona variety was a landmark in curbing the occurrence of rusts in this part of the world. He said that scientists should work pro-actively with respect to the race UG 99 of stem rust of wheat. Offering his best wishes to Dr. Kang and all PAU scientists, students and employees, Dr. Sraon said that PAU should grow by leaps and bounds saying we want to see it growing.







Dr. Kang while welcoming Dr. Sraon to PAU shared that in the formative years of PAU many people from abroad visited the campus and that Ohio State University (OSU) had strong linkages with PAU. He traced how in 1964 the PAU had trimester system. Dr. Kang said that PAU is having a food industry centre here, based on the OSU model. He said that PAU has reprioritized its programmes to make these need based. He highlighted that proper grain storage structures were needed as there is huge loss of food grains taking place under open storage.







Those who participated in the interaction meeting included Dr. Jiwan S. Sidhu, Professor and Chairman, Department of Family Sciences, Kuwait University, Kuwait and the Additional Director Communication, PAU, Dr. Jagtar Singh Dhiman. Dr. Sidhu said that the lignin and silica content of cereal stems impart resistance against lodging. He discussed about new advancements in ready to serve foods. He delivered a seminar to the faculty and students of Department of Food Science and Technology. Dr. Kang presented PAU souvenirs to Dr. Sraon and Dr. Sidhu.
